Hi I am new to the forum, however I am not new to the world of fish. I appreciate any help you all will give me. Just saying thanks in advance!

I have a 12 gallon eclipse. I would have loved to get a 30 or 40gal tank, but our dorm here will only allow 10gal so I am already bending the rules. lol I want to stock with blue rams. I have already cycled the tank with rasboras and my water is where it needs to be...except for softness. I will be doing a 50% water change with R/O water this evening. My tank is filled with lava rocks and heavily planted. I have black sand and two pieces of driftwood(to aid in water softness, doesn't help much lol).

Maintenance is no problem with me. I change the water(20%) at least once a week, and sometimes two. It depends on how my water tests. When I get the rams I will change twice a week. Once 10% and the other 20%. Half tap, half R/O.

I've over crowded a tank successfully before, and I currently have another 12gal with 10 community fish and it is technically overcrowded with good results. It just requires extra water changes.

My question is how many rams do you think I can house? Right now, I count 4 open caves from the lava rock, plus the plants and driftwood. I would like to house 4. I know this is pushing it due to their territorial nature, but if this were an issue, I would add more to lessen aggression.

Comments?

I have a feeling that four will get territorial also, but I forgot to mention a couple things. I will be purchasing them at around a inch. And I will be getting a 55gal around June when I move. And also I hope to get either 2 or 3 females to one male. Maybe I'll end up sticking with two.

In my mind 2 rams would work - one male, one female. 4 is just asking for trouble and the dominant ones would harass and kill the others...

I have to agree with Cathy. 2 rams is iffy in a 10g as it is. 4 rams is right out.

I personally keep my breeding pair of rams in a 29g by themselves. 10g is going to be cramped.

Yea if they breed, it will be a problem. Thought I could provide enough hiding places to get by. I guess I will get two and then add some tetras or something.

Ok, so two it is. What would you say the minimum size tank mates for the rams. Danios?

Well I got some long finned danios. I'll test the water in a week and then add two rams.

One ram and no tankmates.

A bonded pair will be fine. The tank is very heavily planted and has a nice amount of lava rock in it.
