could i just use h.o.b filters and live rock in a fowlr aquarium and leave the under gravel filter out? and no i cant use a canister or wet/dry filter.

UGF's are WAY old technology and are more harmful now than helpful. The best type of filtration is lots of live rock and a skimmer and then some powerheads for water movement. My favorite filter (that I use on my Seahorse tank and my bigger tank) is the Emperor 400's. Anyway hope this helps and good luck!
 
thanks-how much live rock would i need for good filteration? or could i use a few pounds of live rock and an aquaclear 70 (is that 2 small?)and a power head(s).?

(for a 55 gallon tank)
