The tank I keep at my parents will soon be upgraded to a 20 gallon. The current fishy occupants are a small school (5) of silver tipped tetras and an unknown bottom feeder (maybe Epalzeorhynchus kallopterus) that has decided to school with the tetras.

My dad wants something more colourful and exciting to add to the new tank. I was thinking a small school of 5 tiger barbs would be nice ans hopefully mix well. And hopefully this will be not too overstocked for the 20 gallon.

Does anyone see a problem with this mix? The tetras are full grown and have been around for over a year.

Thanks

It should be fine because with that many, the tigers will chase eachother.

Tiger Barbs have been known to be semi-aggressive, so I'm not sure about adding them....

If you decide to go with a kinder, gentler barb, the one that works best with tetras (*IMO) is the Cherry Barb. Two males and four females would be good.

Thanks for the replys. It is a 20 regular which I will fill with a lot of plants. I actually wanted something a little bit aggresive as these Silver Tips have been known to take out the occassional algea eater in the past. They have gotten quite big (close to 2 inches). Anyway I will also look at the cherry barbs.

you could also look at the golden, checker (thou they are not as colourful) and blue/green tiger barbs. there is a wide range, many more than hav been listed so far.
