my aquarium is currently cycling and i was hoping to get into cichlids once it is all said and done with now heres my questions
1. what is all the care involved ph ect.
2. can they mix with any kind of catfish or algae eater???
oh yeah the type i'm wanting are kenyi cichlids they are so cute and beautiful the ones at my work are trying to mate the male is so bright and digging the place up and shaking his body violently in front of the females. anyway thats about all i know about them is breeding habits so any help would be appreciated!!!!:D

heya,

if you have a lower acidic ph, you will be more suited to the cichlids of S.America and the african rivers (6.0-7say)

and anything higher is really more suited to Lake sp. and C.American...7.8+...)

i would match the fish to your water, so you have less work to do maintaining a steady ph, which is healthier for your fish.

So what is your ph from the tap, and 24 hrs later?????

i have yet to get my ph tested yet but usually its around 7.5 the work to get the ph high enough is not a problem for me at all i like the work i work with fish allllll day long its my job. the cichlids that i want are the kenyi cichlids from work what beautiful fish. the tank has the set up they need minus a filter i have one but not 2 do i really need 2 the cichlids i have at work have one on the tank and are doing wonderfully. i'd really like to know the answers to all my questions. please!!

For the Kenyi you will need at least a 40 gallon long tank. A 1 male and at least 4 females ratio. Sand as substrate and lots of stacked rocks for them to hide and play in. Feed mainly Veggie based foods like Spirulina based flake food and you can also feed them chopped peas, slices of zucchini or lettuce too keep things interesting. Do NOT feed meat based foods. For breeding there is really not much you can do to help but if the conditions are ok they will breed. There is also no need for 2 filters if the 1 you have is big enough for the size tank you are getting. Hope that helps a bit
