Is there a way to get rid of this green coralline alge that I have so that the reds, purples, and pinks can come out more? I have had this tank for a little over a year now and I have a basic 10,000k daylight and a blue acentic bulb in there. 48". I have it on for 9 hrs max, and I use oceans blend parts I and II. I also dose with purple up but im getting green up. Kinda Ironic lol. But I have tested my water and I brought it to a lfs and they tested and the tests come back the same. Is there a way to slow the green to get the others? I do have a lot of purple blots all over but there is way, way, way more green. Thanks.

Is the red coraline growing in the more shaded areas? I'd say the green coraline is just a reaction to the level of light you have in the tank. It's better at exploiting high light areas. What are the long term plans with your tank? If you get corals etc they will shade areas allowing the red, purple, and pink coralines to better establish them selves.

WELCOME TO AC!!

Really just to have it set up as a reef tank. I have a 55g with about 50-60lbs or live rock. I have some carnations, mushrooms, gargonia, one sponge, and some zoo's. Like I said I've had it for a year, and just started noticing the coarlline alge taking over but eversince I started using the purple up its taken over really fast but its green. I have a very inexpensive, basic light set up and want to go with a compact floruesent with metals in it but I do not know. I have to save money up for that still. But after doing some searching and finding out that this green alge likes to grow more under lighing I may hold off on that for a little while. I have noticed though that the nicely colored coralline alge that I do have is under the more shaded areas. Should I run my lights a little less than I already have them?

There may be an easier way I'd guess that a lot of your green algae is really young colonies of purple/pink coralines. They start out green and go purple as they grow up,"can't promise this but, that's the probable outcome." The green coralines tend to grow in really high light areas so there is a chance that some of them may take over in the very top but, I sort of doubt it. I think in a few weeks your tank will probably be nicely purple.

Exactly how much lighting do you have? you said one basic 10,000K bulb and 1 actinic, how many watts are they?

My coraline loves the light and I see darker purples near the top of the tank, Id say up the lighting for awhile to 10-11 hrs a day, IMO

It seems that the coraline in my tank grows best when it is exposed to a lot of the blue actinic light. How many watts do you have running per the volume of water in your tank?

Not trying to hijack the thread here, it is on the same topic... is green coraline algae bad? And how long would it take to turn purple if in fact it was a young colony?

Green coralines aren't bad. It's just that most people like the purple coraline better. I have green, purple, white and brown coraline in my tank. I did have orange coraline but it disappeared.

My lighing is two t10 bulbs which are 40watts a piece so its just under 2 watts a gallon. I am hoping ot upgrade in the near future however.

I also noticed an increased growth in green CA when I upgraded my lighting. My tank is also 55g and uses 1 20k daylight and 1 blue actinic. It started appearing right after I installed the new bulb. It's a dark shade of green, but I think I prefer the pink/purple variety.
