I have a 80 gallon tank I'm preparing to move, here is my idea, tell me if this is the correct way to do it.I was going to drain the water into several buckets, then put my yellow tang in one of the buckets (the only fish i have) then of course move the tank( it is being moved to a different room im my house) and since i was planning to change to sand anyway i thought I would do it while the tank is empty (i have crushed coral currently) then refill the tank and put the tang in, think it will work?

yes, it would work but, why not just use new water? Make sure your l.r. is setting on the glass in your tank and not the sand.

When I moved locations (tottaly a new house), I put everything including the sand into buckets. I also took some of the old water. I then used 75% new water. No cycle whatsoever. The only thing I lost was an lta.

Just consider it a huge water change. I am glad to hear you are getting rid of the cc.

When I moved I tried to take as much as I possibly could in buckets. I probably had about 60 percent of the existing water, and added the difference BUT, after it was all set up I noticed all my fish were breathing heavily, I started freaking out. I went and bought bacteria you know that stuff you add to new tanks?, and I dont know if thats what did it but the next day everything was fine. My sailfin was on his side and not moving even if I touched him. I seriously have no idea how he survived.
