I just acquired a 45g acrylic tank and wanted thoughts om filtration. I want to get a canister to hide away in my stand and was thinking about a filstar xp2 or xp3? Is the xp2 ok for tank size or is the xp3 overkill?

I think that the xp-2 will be fine for a tank that size. I have an eheim classic 2215 running on my 46 and it is running like a charm. Very quiet, I mean silent, and extremely efficient.

I am looking for a canister filter for my 38G tank too, thanks for the post. A side question, how long could the hoses be? The reason I am asking is because I need to place the canister beside the stand but would like the hoses be dangled on the back of the stand. I remember seeing somewhere that if the hoses are too long the pressure won't be sufficient. The top of my tank is about 45.5 inches above the ground.

Thanks

I guess I should have been more clear about the filter on my 46. The main filter on the 46 is an eheim 2215 but I am also running a penguin 200 in addition to that filter just because I like to overfilter my tanks. In reality, technically the eheim 2215 alone should be able to filter the 46 but I find that my fish seem healthier and happier with more filteration.

I believe you asked also about the fish in my 46. This is a discus tank and has four sub-adult discus with a small school of glo-lite tetras, a small school of panda cories, a clown pleco and an albino bristlenose pleco. All are doing well in this fully planted aquarium.

Well...based upon everyone's input and what I've read...I decided to go with the Eheim 2215 classic. It's actually less than the latest Fluval 305. The latest Fluvals seem to be a bit more these days.

So, maybe I should have asked this before...but how is cleaning the Eheim classic? It seems from the pic, there maybe no baskets...or are there?
If there are not, might seem to be a pain to repack the layers. Any comments?
Thanks!

No, there are no baskets in the eheim classic series. If you want to kep the media contained then you can buy media bags to hold the media and seperate the different kinds of media provided in the canister.
