I have a 55g fresh set up and am considering low maint. live plants. I know my current 2x13 watt lighting is inadequate.

I have the opportunity to pick up a 48" VHO (110w X 2) with IceCap 430 Ballast light fixture for a reasonable price. I am not familier with VHO lighting. Is 220 watts too much light? Can I put in smaller wattage bulbs? What bulbs would you recommend?

I am not planning on CO2 or ferts (at this time).

110x2 is good light, but IMO too much if you do not plan on CO2 or ferts. You will be looking at stunted plant growth and algae blooms.

problem I had with this on my 75..I added co2 and ferts..I also had the tank too lightly planted..
2X 110w
I am experimenting with more plants to suck up the light and nutrients.

If your looking to be low maintenence you should keep to the low light set ups. 80 watts of proper flourescent lighting should be enough to grow plants such as crypts and java fern. Be prepared to do a bit of battle with algae when you first get everything started though.
