So I am going to make some sponge filters and would like to know which sponge would be best. I was thinking of buying some aquaclear 500 sponges and making two out of each.

Well, if your looking for bang for your buck have you considered something like Big Als Sponge . Not sure how many filters you could make with it, but it has to be more than 2.
