When I start getting fish for my tank, I have a 10gal that I will be using for a qt tank. I have a whisper filter rated for 30 gallons or so, got it used for free but it works fine. What media do you guys use for your qt filters? The carbon bag inserts? I use either lava rock or filter floss in all my HOB filters, but they're all freshwater and I'm just looking for biofiltration pretty much on those tanks. Ideas?

In my qt/triage I always have used a sponge filter. That way you can just keep a spare sponge somewhere out of the way in your main set up and not have to worry about a cycle or feeding the tank. I'd Imagine you could do something similar with the carbon pack from your filter but, I'm not sure. I'd also sort of guess that it wouldn't have nearly the surface area of a sponge filter but, it would probably work. Just get some pvc pipes, and flower pots for hiding and a heater and you're ready to go.

A sponge filter is a good idea, I have an extra air pump and can keep it in my fuge to keep it cycled. So just some structure in the qt tank, don't need any substrate?

Nope, sploke bare bottom is the way to go! Just put in some flower pots, pvc pipes etc to give your fish a place to hide.
