How often do you have the lights on and do you have plants?

Flourescent lights on during the day.

And an amazon sword plant.

We have had this tank up for about a year, and the algae has shown up in the past month.

I get alge on my glass also and the only two things that work for me are a glass cleaning pad with the crushed walnutshells on one side, takes lots of elbow grease:(.What I normaly do is use a razor blade.Make sure to use a new one each time as the edge will rust you might not see the rust but you will after you use it and scratch the glass.

You could try adding more plants. This would reduce the amount of nutrients in the water for the algae. Or you could get rid of the amazon and just keep the lights off 'cept for when you're looking at the tank. Despite this, I'm a strong advocate of Somefinn's "elbow grease" method. Just roll up your sleeves and get to work:)
