the breed them?
i thought they were illegal everywhere...i'm pretty sure you can keep them with a special permit, not positive on that. but I don't think they are avalible to the general public. and yeah, they've been breeding them for 15 years in captivity. read the webpage.

Asian aros in the wild are endangered, still no conclusive studies done on their wild population. Until thats done and it shows their numbers are back up they won't be taken off the endangered species list.
That said, they are mass produced in farms all over South East Asia. They are readily available to regular hobbyists in countries such as Canada and the UK, for a price though $$$.

it's not to take them off the endangered species list, it's just to make them legal to keep in the USA.
They first need to come off of the endangered species list before the US will allow them to be kept. It all has to do with CITES and the agrement the US government has made with them. If you do not know what CITES is here is the website. http://www.cites.org/
You could have a million signatures on the petition and it will mean nothing until the study of their natural habitat is done. On a side note did you look at some of the signatures and comments on that petition. The one person said it doesn't matter he'll buy them illegally and release them into the wild. If you want a petition to be taken seriously thats not the way to do it.

They are legal in Canada! They come with papers and a micro chip from the farm where they are breed! Breeding them is a big thing in asia. Pretty expensive here greens go for around 400 canadian, RTGs go for 1200, and reds are 2000+. But they are some of the most beautiful fish I have ever seen!

The thing is, they must be taken off the endangered species list before they will be legal to keep. Its not CITES thats holding them back, its the fact that they are on the endangered species list thats keeping them illegal in the US

Not counting the tank and everything, it'd still take a long time to save up to buy one at $5 a week.

I saw a RTG at the Shedd aquarium in Chicago. It was the most beautiful fish that I have ever seen. Hands down. Graceful, powerful, colorful......just simply beautiful. Here is a pic of the one that was there. I have a hard time grasping how they could be thought of as ugly, but I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

There is often a disconnect in how certain species are imported or banned in this country and the logic behind it. I firmly believe that threatened or endangered species should be rigorously protected. However, as is often the case in this country (and others) which species is protected and which is not is more a political than a logical process. A popularity contest, if you will.
Concerned aquarists at the hobby level are often crucial to the preservation of various species. There are many species that only exist in fish tanks these days. The common White Cloud is a classic example of a fish extinct in its native habitat. Many Cichlids are also an excellent example. In Madagascar, cichlids are disappearing faster than they can be identified! Victorian species are also threatened. Serious, sincere breeding programs at the hobbyist level are the key to making sure that many of these species survive, UN-HYBRIDIZED, for possible reintroduction in the wild, should conditions permit.
From what I understand, the asian aro captive breeding programs are quite successful, and the import of these and only these specimens would not be problematic in my opinion. However, as mentioned above, there is also a lag or disconnect in what the breeding status is and the need to continue import bans. Economic conditions can also not be ruled out - fish such as asian aros fetch a large ransom, particularly if they remain on "the list" and in the control of select breeders. Of course, I'm sure such "deals" are never made at the international level ;)

We should print up bumber stickers that read "Legalize arowana". It could be like a fish keeps code, a way of spoting each other that the rest of the world wont understand. hehe
