I was curious on where people are putting their thermometers to get their readings? I just got a digital with a sensor and I am unsure on where the best place to put the sensor to get an accurate reading.
Anywhere in the tank should do fine. I couldn't imagine that there would be any temp difference really unless you were right next to a heater and probably not even then with the water flow in s.w. tanks.

I have one in the overflow box and one in our sump -- both digital and two different brands. They don't read the same, but I consider it more of a difference in performance than a real difference in temp.

We have one in the tank & sump...So far it's worked well :) I think it equals out with the heat from the MH....

Sump.
Place of max flow in my tank (as would be in most tanks), thus creating a low temperature gradient.
