I will be setting up a 55 gallon fish only tank soon when i set up my 90 gallon reef tank. For the 55 Gallon tank i am trying to figure out what would be better for a filter.

Power Filters

or

Canister Filters

Also what would be the best to pick from all of these? What is the difference between the canister from the power filter other then the obvious.

hands down--canister filters. or a combo of both. eheim is a really good cannister filter. it is expensive though.--jeff

Empty canister for flow....but nothing else.

Either way the only advantage of a cannister is it will give you a place to put activated carbon if you were to have an issue. They will also have colonies of pods, sea squirt, sponges etc, but, really either way is good. Your live rock should do most of the denitrifications for you.

Empty canister filter may not be a good idea if you don't have enought LRs in your tank.
Do what I did. Establish your tank, add enough LRs and then take the media out of the filter.
