Well I found a single flourescent baton in my shed so I decided to do some electrical work and install it in my hood.

I've now gone from 36w to 72w in my 55 Gallon tank. However the tank now looks yellowish.

I think the tank looked better before the new lighting :p

Is it just the bulbs? (Normal hardware shop ones)

Are the expensive ones from the pet store's any better looking?

Yes it is just the bulb. You have a low K rating bulb installed. My guess would be around 3000K. You can get cheap better looking lights at Lowes or Home depot. Just look for full spectrum lights not "soft white" or "cool white"

What length of bulb will you need? If you can, get a bulb in the 5,000K to 10,000K range. The "plant and aquarium bulbs work fine.

You can get all the bulbs you need at Home Depot. I have 2 5000K bulbs and two 6500K bulbs. They are very cheap there. I got a two pack of the 6500K for less than $5. Don't get the plant and aquarium bulbs, they are pointless and just a scheme to make you buy them because they say plant and aquarium on them and they are more money. The 5000K are called natural daylight and the 6500K are called daylight delux.

That of course is the case if they have Home Depot in Oz.

I have yet to find *any* UK DIY/hardware shops that flog lights that have a stated colour temperature. I've also yet to find any that are any good for an aquarium.

You guys in the US don't know how lucky you are on that one.

The four foot bulbs are your best bet because they have the widest range of bulbs for the least amount of money. If you can't find what you're looking for in the shops, have you considered buying online?

Well I'm going to have a look this weekend, last night I finally found some DIY Ballasts in Aus.......

I'll have a look for some bulbs online now. ;)

And Home Dept, well we Have Mitre 10 and Bunnings.......Whether or not they will have the K rating listed is another thing.
