i dont think there is a way to clean it, but to get the stuff from on top of the sand all you have to do is hold the gravel vac a few inches from the san and everythig will some off of it. how did stuff get mixed in with your sand??

It really depends on how fine the sand is. I have Onyx Sand made by SeaChem and I always put the vac right into the sand and the sand stirs up. Only the waste gets sucked up. However, I think the estes sand might be too fine, I am not sure though.

Thats probably too fine to actually put the vacuum right into it. You would just hold the vac about an inch or so above it.

I use a mesh bag and rubber band to the siphon tube the bag is 4"x10" when it plugs with sand I pinch the hose off the sand drops I resume cleaning.Another option is to just do it in to a bucket and instead of dumping it down the drain do it slowly and readd any lost sand back to the tank.

I don't have problem with my sand and vacumming. I stirr up the sand and place the hose in the sand. When I lift the hose back up the sand falls down. Maybe a little bit gets sucked up but not enough to worry about. (I use sand blasting sand)

Same as punch--but the waste in my tank stays on the surface. What is causing the waste to get buried? You may want to add some plants to your tank--they would readily use that waste.

waste are getting buried because of my convicts breeding..they tend to dig up holes before they spawn
