Any of you own a piranha? If so how did u get it?. My dad use to own one and housed it in a 30 gal tank for quite some time (before they became illegal to sell)...

I don't own any but out here they're pretty abundant. Petco's stopped carrying them but just about any Mom and Pop store around here stills has a school, which is how I'd recommend to keep them. Mostly red-bellied, but sometimes a black will show up.

It's still legal here to sell them and we do. It's a college town. Anything with teeth and an appetite will sell here. Just FYI if you are thinking about keeping them: they are really beautiful if they are healthy and don't nip each other constantly. However, we get calls at least once a week "will you take back my piranha?". People get tired of feeding it, it sits motionless in the back of the tank most of the day, it's not a very active fish. And most people want that swimming action so they can sit and watch it. Plus many times it gets overfed because it is so amusing (for some) to watch it eat, thus the water quality gets bad because they don't clean it enough.....get the picture? We've had idiots threaten to dump theirs in the lake if we don't take it back. Sweet.

BBN I'm in Charleston, IL at Easter Illinois University. I live about an hour from there and commute. My brother is the owner or I wouldn't be doing this.;)

I used to have one many years ago. I wish I had room for more tanks, I'd get some again. They are really cool fish. Here's a link with a few pictures.

how much do you make off re-selling piranhas? Hey, wonder if you could do a rent-a-piranha deal
We've got three. Not only are they inactive, they're also skittish. The floor vibrates, and if you walk past the tank too much, they go smashing into things.
But, we knew that before getting them (and have 5 other tanks!) so it's cool. They're really beautiful fish, just not the violent psychopathic predators the movies make them out to be. Want that - get a cichlid!
