Is it important to have a generator? I am setting up a 90 Gallon tank to change my 24 gallon over to that. I have been told when you go to a larger tank its better to get a generator incase you loose power so that you don’t loose all of your corals. As a precaution type of thing. Does anyone have one? What size of a generator would i need and what brand would you suggest. I would only use it for the aquarium, and would only use it for a power outage so do not want to spend a lot of $$.

Any suggestions? Is it needed?

Thanks

u dont really need to worry about anything unless for some ungodly reason you lose power for a few days on end. having a short power outage during a thurderstorm or what have you every once in a while is not a problem. i dont have one and have never really used them so i couldnt give you any info on them.

In Rochester where we get lots of snow, We have lost power 2 times for about a week to 5 days in the last 10 years... That is a big gamble to play with me investing in a reef tank.

How many watt generator should i get do you suggest anyone?

While there's only been 1 time that we've gone more than a day without power (bad ice storm; power lost for 4 days), I have not been overly concerned about power outages (perhaps ignorantly). We didn't have a reef tank then, only fw tanks, and everyone survived room temps that dropped into the mid 50s, which would likely be deadly for a reef tank. My only prep for an extended outage since starting our reef has been to have an adequate power inverter to run pumps / heaters onhand and keeping the 4 batteries we use for our boat fully charged.

At a minumum a 3000w generator is required.
I have only lost power 2 times for less than 6 hours in 10 years.
I am considering a whole house gen on propane.
I have $20k in my fishroom. Power went out today because of ice storms.
Very scary no power in winter. Cold temps are very bad for tropical tanks.
POWER WAS OUT 2 HOURS.
I have been lucky.
If you have more $$$$ in livestock than the cost of the gen than the gen will pay for itself the first time you need it!

I run a Lister Diesel 2 Cyl Diesel, Will run the house for a month for 40.00. 12Kw running the entire house.
