Hi what is the difference between a pleco and a catfish??!!

Also is there a pleco/catfish suitable for a smaller tank, i see some lovely ones at my LFS and they all grow to about 30cm.

Thanks in advance.

all plecostomus are 'catfish' but not all catfish are plecostomus. tyhe bristlenose catfish only grows to about 4.5 inches. what size is your tank?

Measure away. Plecos in general are high waste output fish. Messy in other words. Even the small ones may be a bit much for a tank under 20 gallons.

If you do have to get one, get a smaller one and be prepared to do water changes more often. Bristlenose stay small, and are usually avaliable, but do your reasearch on them first.

Pretty Much...if you want something that will eat algae, get a pleco, if you want something that will eat the stuff at the bottom of the tank, get a catfish, such as cory cat or banjo cat, many differet kinds

Well have three corys for bottom feeding but really need an algae eater. no tape measure at the minute so taking a guess (remember i said i'm blonde so probably no where near) @ 30cmLx35cmHx35cmW.

It a Aqua 40 if that helps the sort with lid and built in light unit.

I haven't seen any bristle nose in my area can you give me a few other varities that i can keep my eyes open for.

Thanks for your help.

If you're looking for an effecient little algae eater, an otto might be a better choice for a small tank. Ottos stay pretty small, and are algae destroying machines. But as with all fish in a small tank, there's not going to be enough algae to sustain him long. Suppliment his diet with algae wafers and he'll keep you tank and plants free of green algae.

Ottos are very social little creatures and need to be in groups of no less then three. They like to hang out and play togather while they are busy cleaning up the algae.
