The lime content of a rock raises the pH. Lime as in limestone, or calcium carbonate-- with some magnesium carbonate content, as in dolomite. You recognize these by their chalky-to-marble feel. All the rest, except metal ores, are okay.
The beach cobbles of the Oregon/California coast derive from a wide mix of terranes that originated as a whole series of island arcs (like Japan or New Zealand) that have crumpled up against the West Coast of North America over several hundred million years. The most recent arrivals, like Vancouver Island haven't quite joined yet. The original "west" (it lay north) coast of the continent lay back in Nevada or Utah somewhere.
The point of this is, it's a wide mix of rock color and origin in those cobbles. But only the limey ones are no good in the aquarium. All the granite and feldspar and serpentine and jasper and quartzite--even with glints of mica in them-- they're all safe to use.

wetmanNY,
Thanks for that info..! You have a wealth of good info - I may need rock information in the future. (There are no real Florida rocks that I've seen.. LOL) :) Except Coquina.... (?)
