I picked up some plants at the local auction over the weekend and was anxious to get them in my tank. I know A. nana is o.k. to bleach and was pretty sure J.fern was too but I couldn't find anything conclusive about bleaching the Val. I did it anyway and put them in the tank. They look o.k., but the tips of the leaves are a little transparent looking. Might this be from travel and transfer or did I doom them with the 2 min 1:20 bleach bath? I'd hate to think I wasted $1!

You'll probably just have to wait and see. The bleach treatment is purty harsh you know. I don't think I'd buy plants that had algae so bad they needed to be treated with bleach. :)

Yes, That tranparencie is from the bleach treatment. Corkscrew Vals don't like it to much. You will probably lose some leaves too.
Don't worry, Just give them some time, They pop back pretty good and will aver take your tank.

I hope so! They don't look so good. Now the transparency is not just at the tips but down the leaves pretty far. And the tips are deteriorating! I should trim off the ends that are dteriorating right?

I tried to bleach my vals a few months ago and did not have very good results. They all died. All the other plants that got bleached had no problems. Sorry to say that all of your vals might not make it.
You might want to leave the whatever is left in the tank. They might come back. I was pretty upset and just dumped mine after they melted. Its worth a shot.
Hopefully they wont all die. I wouldn't cut them, I don't think that would help and may turn the cut edge brown. Like I said,
Give them some time and they should recover and grow.
If they don't send me a message and I'll send you some from my tank!

Wow! That's awefully nice of you punch! I appreciate it!! It looks like there are a couple solid leaves on 3 of the 5 plants. I'm going to leave them and hope for the best.
Thanks again!

Well, the good looking leaves melted away or are still melting:( BUT, in between the meltdown are new leaves shooting up from 4 of the 5 plants!:) May take a while but looks like they'll be o.k.. Just in case some of you couldn't sleep worrying about my plants:rolleyes: :D
Thanks again!!
I told you just to give them some time! They'll do good and you will soon have runners all over. I had a quarter of my tank covered from just 3 plants! My koolies really like hiding in it!

Just an update...
...after the fish kept picking at the decaying leaves and uprooting them, only 2 are still around. 1 is doing well with 3 new shoots about an inch high, the other only has 1 shoot and still doesn't look too good. I'm starting to think about getting a few new ones.
I would be happy to send you a couple of mine.

That would be great punch! Is shipping cost prohibitive? I don't think they're much $ at the lfs (which doesn't happen to have any right now) and to send them clear cross country...?
Unbelievably, as if fish can read, just after posting my last post, they pulled the smaller plant up! All it is now, is one 3/4 inch blade with two tiny white roots. I buried it anyway so the tip is just above the gravel just out of spite!

Send me an e-mail and I can send you some this weekend.
I can ship priority mail and it should only take 3 days to ship. I'm pretty sure packaged up good they could last that long:p
As for shipping cost it shouln't be more than 4-5 bucks. not much at all.
(just don't bleach these:D )
