Is an Eheim 2026 enough to filter a heavely stocked 80 gal? I want to add a few more than whats listed below.

IMO.

No.
I have one on a 50 gallon with an ac500 running as well.

It is a moderately stocked cichlid tank.

I have a 2028 on my 90 but even then I added a second filter AC300 to help with the bio load.

You may want to add another filter to help you out. Costs more but will save you all sorts of hassles in the long run

I agree with the above. You should go with two canisters or a large sump if you're going to overstock it with cichlids.

I'd go with a cannister and a hob. I like the Aquaclears as they flow a LOT of water and do a good job of mechanical filtering. I use the cannister primarily for biological filtering. For your setup, I'd suggest you add an Aquaclear 110.

What do you guys think about two XP3 canisters, one for mechanical filtration and one for biological filtration. I have a large sump that I used for my brackish tank but I am trying to get away from it and just use canisters instead. I have a 90 gallon that I will be stocking with African cichlids.

Personally I like the XP3's even though I don't own one.

When I was at Big Al's I would always suggest them as a cheaper atlternative to the eheims (who raised their prices by 12% last year)

We had a couple running in display tanks around the store and they worked quite well. I even heard a that they had surpassed the fluval as the #2 selling canister (behind eheim) world wide.

Two XP3's would be a great choice IMO.

Personally, I would stay with the sump and maybe add a canister for good measure. If you're doing an african cichlid tank most likely you'll have to overstock your tank to keep the aggression level spread out. The sump would help you add more gallonage to your tank which would help you with keeping your water parameters in check. It's also a good place to hide your heaters so you'll have more freedom to put rocks and other decos on the tank.

Well I ended up going with an XP3. I ordered it on line from Petsmart for $109+tax. From everything that I've read it is comparable to the Enheim in performance but not reliability. I've got two Wisper 30-60's on the tank as well. Maybe I'll get another XP# down the road if I like the way this one is running. I'll have to wait and see. I hope that I get the filter by Christmas. Hope, hope, hope.... :)
