Will my fish freeze?

Hi all,

My roommate and I are going out of town for a few weeks for the holidays and she wants to turn the heat down in our house to 62 degrees. I'm nervous about how that will affect my fishtank. I'll leave the heater on, of course, but will that be able to compensate for the dropped heat in the house?

I keep my house at 67 all the time and the heater more than makes up in keeping it a steady 77ish..

if you follow the standard 5W/gallon rule most people use with heaters (50W per 10G) the heater should be able to hold the tank to about 12-15F above room temperature.

ok...thanks everyone....I actually got nervous and went out and purchased another heater today......it's a better heater than the one I got with the tank....and so my plan is to leave both running while I'm away and then I'll just use the new one and save the other for a hospital tank or something.

I have another question though, if you don't mind.....

I decided to do a water change and cleaning today (this way it's close to my departure, but I'm still around for a couple of days, just in case)...and I noticed that my filter seems to be producing a very weak flow.....this has happened before, and I just rinse the sponges and everything was fine.....

So.....as before, I took the filter out and thoroughly rinsed out the sponges (which I did in tank water from the water change). When I replaced the filter, it ran well for a minute and then the water flow totally stopped.

I jiggled it a bit and water flow started again, this time, full force....a few minutes later, it stopped again......

I picked it up and tilted it and the flow came back...and when I put it back in its spot it went off again......

I had to go out to dinner so I left it...now I'm home and it's back on...but who knows how long that will last or how long it's actually been working.....

What's going on?

The filter is a "Fluval 4 Plus"...anyone familiar with that model?

Not familiar with that particular filter, but does it have an intake tube? If so is it seated all the way down in the compartment? This dumbfounded me, one of my stupid moments, when I was setting a filter back up after cleaning. Just a thought anyway.

since the heater you are going to use is new and you are unfamiliar with it, and who knows if it could have a defect and might not work right.
I would set it up right away and drop the temp in the house while you are still there to make sure all will be good.
