So I currently have a single balloon belly (I think) fry in my 10 gallon. Soon I'm going to add a few dwarf platies, maybe some von rio tetras. I don't know. But regardless, I already have an algae problem starting. So I would like to get at least one oto- do they do better in pairs? Should I just feed algae wafers? I really know very little about them, so would appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Hi,

With Von Rio Tetras (assumming your getting 3-5), a few Dwarf Platies, plus a Ballon Belly Molly, in my opinion your already fully stocked. If you don't get the Dwarf Platies, you could get three Otos instead. Never get only one Oto, because, like Cories, they like to have some company.

scrape the algea yourself. IMO, that is the best algea eater for a tank of ten gallons, unless you want a snail, and adding any fish would OS your tank. how many tetras and platys are you getting?

If you do weekly 50% water changes minimum, I don't see why you can't have all the fish on your list.

But you really wouldn't be able to add anything else.

Say 5 flame tetras, 3 dwarf platies (1m:2f), the balloon molly, and about 3 or 4 oto's (they like groups). The largest fish in that tank would be 2.5 - 3"

If your tank starts getting horrible water quality with a load like that, trust me, it's due to tank neglect (not doing water changes), not overstocking. These are small fish, and all are peaceful (the molly does have potential to be semi-aggressive), but with normal tank maint. you'll be fine. You could even look into easy low-light plants to improve the water quality even more and add some pleasing aesthetics.

Some people like to have their tanks understocked which is fine, but that doesnt mean your stocklist can't work.

I once kept a juvie sunshine plec, juvie gold nugget, and juvie queen arabesque in a 10g QT for 4 weeks. Those three juvies were each about 3-4" each, and I'm sure the bioload they produced was greater than the 12 fish you want, and guess what my nitrates were before their weekly water change: 10ppm (the tank had a few low light plants, dwarf lillies mostly).

lets keep in mind balloon mollies don't get over 2", guys.
I just want to point out that dwarf platies do not exist and are young regular platies. I think you should get a few small tetras that don't get over 2" and 4 otos.

Hi fishcatch22, at first I didn't believe dwarf platies existed either, but I heard an arguement that made me think so: eye size.

The person posted pics of normal juvie platies with small eyes, and the "dwarves" had larger eyes than normal... I don't know if anyone's had them long enough to see if they grow normally or not.... and hopefully they're not stunted fish being passed off as normal fish.

I'll buy some soon and raise them to try and shed some light. If you know differently please help me out :)

my platies were "dwarfs" and they grew to be normal platies.
