Yellow Cichlids

I thought they were the same. I was at the LFS looking for an Electric Yellow, but they didn't have any in stock. So they looked on their order sheet and saw a Lemon Yellow listed with the scientific name of Labidochromis but nothing after it. I thought I had seen references to 'Electric' and 'Lemon' being different names for the same fish. I haven't ordered it yet because I wanted to make sure.

If they aren't the same, what can you tell me about a 'Lemon Yellow'?

Aahh. This could be a little tough for ordering purposes. Electric yellows generally are the species Labidochromis caeruleus which is a Malawi species that is somewhat aggressive but not nearly so as his other mbuna cousins. They get to be 4" or so and are fairly easy to breed. Lemon cichlids generally are referred to the Tanginyikan species Neolamprologus lelupi which are a bit harder to find but still pretty common. They stay smaller, I don't think I've ever seen one over 2.5", and are testy but still nothing too bad compared to other cichlids. I'd say that you're getting the former but you may want to have them clear that up.

I have seen Labidochromis caeruleus labeled as both electric yellows and lemon yellows. I wold think that if there are called lemon yellows with the scientific name Labidochromis after it they are talkign about Labidochromis caeruleus.

I have also seen N.lelupi as lemon yellows but in your case i thik they are talkign about L.caeruleus
