if you don't intend to have any corals are protein skimmers necessary? i honestly don't know what their function is so maybe someone could shed some light on them for me?

They use the tension caused by sodium bicarbonated water to help "skim" wastes off of the top of the water. You get a good cupful of crap every few days. You wouldn't believe what I pull out of mine, and my skimmer is a pretty bad one! You can get a decent one for $70. Strongly recommended. By me at least.
