I have about 120lbs of LR in my 150gal. I would like to add at least 80lb more. Can I put the new (cured) LR immediately or will it cause an ammonia spike? Is it safe to add any amount of LR at any time? Is it the same for live sand?

Thanks.

as long as it is completly cured it will be fine.
if youa re looking to purchase on the internet though, remember, even though they sell it cured, it isnt after shipping to your door.

If you know the live rock is cured from you lfs and you are picking it up yourself, try and transport it in water, worked for me. That way its always covered in water and you should not get any die off while transporting it..

My LFS told me live rock should probably not be out of water for more than 24 hours.

I want to buy my next order of live rock from online...the one company takes 2 days to get here...

How long can live rock stay out of the water? Is 2 days too long?

they wrap it in wet newspaper so there is still life on it. but since it is manhandled, and put in the dark for two days with not a lot of water, some dieoff will occur and you will have to cure it again

Thank you! Yes, that's exactly what they stated they would do- wrap it in newspaper. You sound like you've purchased this way before?

Thanks for your help.

I would not under any circumstance put rock that had been out of water for 2 hours let alone 2 days into my display tank! Get a rubbermaid tub and treat it as uncurred rock that's what it wll be after a 2 day shipment.

Yes, I did decide not to go with the 2-day shipping place where it's supposedly "cured." I figure I'll have to cure any good rock that I get anyway. I haven't received my main tank yet so it should be fine curing in there...or I can break it down and cure it in my 2 quarantine tanks but would rather not do that.
