Hi all,
I just started a 29 gallon that is set up nicely with a good amount of decorations and fake plants and have 6 serpae tetras and two coreys. I was wondering what would be suitable tankmates for the serpaes? I am also using a aqua clear 50 HOB filtration with a 100 and 75 watt heater in there too. Any suggestions across the board would be great. I'm holding off on any more fish for a few weeks to let the nitrites drop to zero. Other than the nitrites being a little high the Ph and everything else is fine. Thanx for any suggestions :)

Can you give us the exact ammonia, nitrite and nitrate readings?

How long has the tank been set up?

Myself, I would leave the tank as-is. A 29 gallon tank is not very large and will be much easier to maintain if you dont go adding tons of fish. Your fish will be much happier.

When the nitrites have dropped and maintain at zero (and you should be doing water changes to keep that level artifically low until it does it alone) then I would just suggest a larger group of cories. They do best in larger groups and will be more active and fun to watch.

I second that.

6 tetras and two cories is very understocked... There is plenty of room to add a few more cories and a dwarf gourami.

Thx for the replies everyone. I kinda goofed a little when I set up the tank initially. I had a ten gallon that I had the 6 serpaes in as well as a red eye tetra and two algae eaters. I got the 29 gallon for xmas and was so excited to get it started I set it up and waited two days, then I added the Jungle Start right fizz tablets as well as the jungle PH and ammonia remover. Needless to say I thought I would be safe, but ended up killing the red eye, two algae eaters and two serpaes. I got the cloudy haze in the tank for 4 days. I upgraded to the aqua clear 50 and did a couple of water changes and the cloudiness went away. So I went out and got two more serpaes and two coreys and they seem happy and healthy so far, even though the nitrites are still spiked. I tested the water from the tap, which comes from a well, and there is no nitrites or nitrates in it. Just seems to be slightly acidic and hard. So I guess the sudden surge of fish in the new tank caused the nitrite spark as the tank and filter are not cycled biologically. I learned my lesson and will be wiser next time. I was wondering if one of the dwarf chiclids would get along in the tank, or how bout tiger barbs? Again any further responses are greatly appreciated :)

Heh, you remind me of myself when I first started. This hobby is tough on those of us with little patience, but it's a virtue you must develop, or else this "hobby"/lifestyle will not be a pleasant experience for you.

You sound like you already know your mistakes, so once you've allowed the tank to cycle, I would suggest a clown pleco or Flash plec: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=126, and a group of Cardinals, or Harlequin Rasboras.
