Anyone had this problem with Oceanic tanks?

I have a 30 gallon Oceanic tank I just acquired over the weekend. It's got the granite trim. I bought an AquaClear filter for it but it seems the trim is too wide for the filter to sit down far enough. There is a lip around the inside of the trim preventing the filter from fitting down. Since it doesn't fit down the outlet for the water is too close to my glass top and half the water runs on to it rather than back into the tank. I also use Penguin Bio-wheel filters on my other tanks so I tested one of those on there for fit and it doesn't seem to fit either. Has anyone else had this problem? What kind of filter do you use with your Oceanic tanks?

I had a similar issue with an AGA 50g aquarium and a penguin 330 filter. It may not help you much, but I now use a cannister filter so the lip size isn't an issue anymore. I have heard of people cutting down the interior trim of their aquariums, but I don't personally recommend doing this.

We have a 30g Oceanic....but not the same trim. We have had no issues with ours.

However.....Hubby is GREAT with his drimmel tool (no smart comments, please lol)....and I'm sure that's what he would use to fix the problem. He helped me make a GREAT cave system from little pots with the tool.

Good luck!

What kind of canister filter do you use Hound? I don't have one and am not too familiar with them. Would one be appropriate for a goldfish tank? I'm not too crazy about the idea of grinding down the lip and would like to find a solution that doesn't involve that if possible.

I use an older fluval 404 on a 50g aquarium along with a surface skimmer attachment. For a 30g aquarium with goldfish I'd be thinking of a fluval 305 or a rena xp-2. At the moment rena filters are much less costly for whatever reason. Even then cannister filters are generally more expensive than power filters and initial install is usually a bit more complicated.

If you don't want to modify your tank to fit the filters in, then change your filter.

An external cansiter would be great and easily modified if needed to fit your tank trim (but doubt you would have to) and the spray bar is perfect for surface agitation. An internal would work also.
