Cycling completed, so we added some "bottom interest" in the form of a pair of farlowellas, 14 otocinclus, and an elephant nose.
Of course I noticed ich the very next day
Of course I never set up a quarantine tank
"Patient zero" (a Diamond Tetra) showed approximately 3 white spots on Thursday evening.
I immediately began raising the temperature and started the addition of salt, eventually hitting one tablespoon per gallon.
(This took 5½ CUPS and like to gave me a heart attack- took me two days to add it all). I vaccuumed the gravel, and also put a Vortex Diatom Filter on the tank Sunday AM.
Patient zero has lost his spots, and the "second generation" of ich now consists of one Harlequin Rasbora with maybe 4 spots- they showed up on Sunday, three days after I noticed the initial problem.
I am hoping that I caught things early enough that the temp (now 86.3ºF), salt, and Vortex will be enough. I understand that the diatom filter removes only those tomites that actually pass through it- between this filter and the other two on there my water is being turned over 10+ times an hour, so I'm hoping most of them will pass through
I stir/vaccuum the gravel up daily, hoping to keep them in the water column as much as possible.
Think I stand a chance??.
I really prefer not to add chems.
I'm thinking that *if* I see third generation spots I'll begin doing salt baths on the affected individuals.
Am I missing anything else that I can do (understanding that I have only the one tank)?
(And how in blazes I rationalized spending big bucks on the tank and choked on springing for a quarantine tank... well, hindsight is a trip ain't it?)
And lastly- anyone know anything about the "super Florida ich" mentioned on wetmanNY's site??
Please don't let it be that!!
