As far as substrates go, I would not buy anything other than Onyx sand or Flourite. Both are from SeaChem and have beneficial nutrients in them. Meaning there's no need for laterite (clay-like product)...

Both products cost a little more than regular gravel or sand.

Also, CO2 injection is the way to go for faster, lush plant growth - not necessary though.. It depends on if you have enough lighting for CO2 use.
