new cichlid

there are a lot of Cichlids.

what were you considering? African? New World?

you have to read up on them to help determine which species you want to consider as they vary widely in water parameters..

I want to african. I have had big fish such as oscars and a pacu in my tank but i have given them away and I want to start a african cichlid tank but don't know the first thing. Water conditions habitat or anything. I need a how to guide or somethig. A good book would be nice. Thanks Shanezoid.

there are a few good books that i purchased on amazon.com on Lake Malawi Cichlids.

Lake Malawi Cichlids - "a complete pet owner's manual" Barron's
and
The Guide to owning Malawi Cichlids - David Boruchowitz

There are a lot of 'different' African Cichlids.

Lake Malawi , Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika are the predominant ones.

I do concur and suggest you read which species you may want to incorporate.

there are several websites you can check out..also cichlid forums.

I'd definitely say you might want to consider 'Mbunu' cichlids. Most grow between 3-5" sometimes a little bigger, and there are many colors and levels of aggression for anything from a fairly easy and docile tank to something with more fiesty fish! You can also keep more of them together since they are fairly small for cichlids. Most Mbunu are also either omnivorous or herbivorous, so its easy to combine fishes for an easy-to-maintain... and VERY colorful... cichlid setup.

I'm certainly working on setting up my own 'Mbunu' tank. Mine is going to have Labidochromis Sp., and possibly some of either Pseudotropheus Demansoni, Pseudo. Scofafli, Lamprologus Tretocephalus, and/or Melanochromis Cyaneorhabdos. I'm working on a diachromatic blue/yellow theme.

How about a well planted South American?
