Oscars have a lot of personality, but, for what you want, I'd go with a Jag.

Yeah, my Oscar has a ton of personality, only he doesn't attack my finger when I put it against the glass. He is more like a puppy dog.

If you really want a fish to attack your finger you should get a Red Devil or Midas. But you must know that they will probably attack your finger when it is in the tank too. Hee hee

My jag doesnt chase my fingers. It prefers trying to attacks everyones face instead of fingers.

if u want a fish that will attack the glass when you put your finger on it go with a red devil. every time i see them at my LFS they jsut attack the heck outta the glass even if ur finger isnt on the glass. they are crazy aggressive.

For a fish that watches everything you do - and 'personality' - my opinion is the Oscar. They can be very messy though.... Large tanks only.

tightdog,
the reason red devils attack the glass constantly is because they hate there reflection i think. but they are crazy aggressive.

oscars are very owner responsive, but there not really aggressive.

my blood parrot tries to bite my finger when i put it own the glass. he also bites me when i clean the tank.

jag will also work

RD are good, some oscars will do it My jag wont go for finger but likes going for everybodies face. Buttkoferi's would work also.

PEACOCK BASS! (Cichla Ocellis)

I used to throw my keys on my bed and the bass would lunge full speed into the glass thinking it was a small baitfish or sumthin. They also would puffup their gills when i would but my face against the tank. Like an Oscar and can be trained.

I have a huge female Protomelas spilonatus that definantly knows me (the hand that feeds her). Not a cichlid, but already the most responsive fish I've owned is my tomato clown.

A lot of SW fish are much more responsive than cichlids, but that's for another day and another forum.

Everyone is suggesting fish me included and never bother to ask the single most important question. How big of a tank do you have or are you getting???

ChilDawg

Good catch, GER. Is this just an open-ended question, or is it for a specific tank size?

You had another Red Devil or you bought 2???

dbcb314
04-16-2003, 3:51 PM
you put 2 red devils in one tank? i would not have done that, especially if they are both males. one of them is bound to kill the other.

GEV83
04-16-2003, 4:06 PM
Yeah that was a pretty dumb move RD dont get along unless in a big tank and they are mates. You know a male and a female not male male or female female fish dont play like that. Next time when we give a list of mean fish give us the tank size and ask if more then one would be ok.

GER1023 => LOL LOL

it would of been a good idea to ask especially with RDs

GEV83

Yeah huh what kind of a dumb nut puts to very aggressive fish together in a 65gal especially before asking if they get along. No offence attended.

Dragon when were you born a Dow's cichlid get way to big for a 65gal plus he already got a Red Devil also this isnt a forum to bully people for the type of fish they have. As long as they didnt have you buy it then dont worry about it.

Dragon_Lord_Tia

im not picking im just saying a parrot cichlid is a mutant

ChilDawg
04-17-2003, 10:24 PM
Everyone who owns a fish owns a mutant. Without mutations, there would be no fishes as the original set of fishes would have died due to not enough variability in the gene pool.

i said to buy a wolf cichlid thats why i ;) knowing they grow 65cm+ and said dont tell him what will realy happen

blood parrot cichlid or what evr you like to call them have been classed as a mutant by several marine biologists i know compared to the fish today

ChilDawg
04-18-2003, 6:24 AM
But they are not mutations of any other fish species...they are hybrids of different species.

Dragon_Lord_Tia
04-18-2003, 10:20 PM
did you ever watch dark angel the people on that are mutants

parrot cichlids more then 50% of the time cant even swim let along eat, breath
now do you see a oscar that can breath, swim, eat unless very sick NO you dont cause their no mutants are they.

GEV83
04-18-2003, 10:25 PM
OK you messed your self up there buddy "do you see a oscar that can breath, swim, eat unless very sick NO you dont cause their no mutants are they." Well in fact I do see oscars that had do all this and not only when there sick. Learn to frase your words better. BP god knows I hate them but they are by no means Mutant they are a hybrid of two species and thats it. Theres nothing left to say so Dragon just drop it. Peace Im Out.

ger your not to bright yourself! all i asked was what fish is most owner responsive. look what you started now? this post is totally off track. and for your information, i have a male and female. so your the "dumb nut." dont automatically assume i have 2 males in my tank. i been having 5 years of on and off expereince with cichlids. i never had a large RD before but i had have juvi RDs and they werent all that owner responsive. so i was just wondering would a big one be able to more owner respinsive. so please shut your mouth before you get humilated even more. i hate people who think they are all that when they only have a couple cichlids in the life. oOooO what a big man... i should be listening to whatever you say and that you have the rights to make fun of people because you owned a few cichlids. FYI: i have bred numerous cichlids and curently im trying to breed more exotic fish.

I SECOND THAT

but i take a bit of the blame for saying he has a mutant fish in which he does:p

OK folks, you're getting a little excited here. Calm down, or the thread gets locked.

By the way, this could be a very interesting topic. The responsiveness (is that a word? responsivity? responsivitude?) of a given fish may not just be measured by how it attacks the glass when someone enters the room, but by other means of interaction as well. Also, it might depend on the size of the tank, kinds of tankmates, ambient traffic in the room, temperature, etc.

man u guys just love to hate!!
cant we all just get along, adn eric is right u got totally off the subject at hand.

Back to the subject, almost all of our cichlids are responsive (we have Zebra mbunas, Blue johannis, Jewel, Rams, Kribs, Firemouth, N.Salvini, Yellow Labs, Red Zebras and the list goes on) and although none of them will attack the glass, they will always come to the front to see me or my wife....they act more like happy puppys rather than guard dogs....IMHO this is because we each talk to the kids every day.
I think most fish will become responsive if you pay enough attention to them (My little "Princess" N.Salvini will come out from her favorite log whenever I call her, and I've only had her 2 weeks) :p
