How many cory's in a tank 55 g tank?

I was just wondering can cory catfish survive in a tank with gravel or should they be in a tank with sand. Also how many do i need for a 55 gallon?
 
i was just worried that he would get hurt or lose his feelers by finding food in the gravel...should i have more than 1 in my 55 gallon?
 
In a 55g you have room for alot of cories...I'd say 10-12. :)
 
ok, what should i feed them, i am using the tetra flakes as well as pellets that sink, im hoping any leftovers will be consumed by them or should i put something in once the lights turn off or what???
 
I feed mine shrimp pellets and spirulina algae wafers. The shrimp pellets should be enough though, along with some left over flakes. You can put the pellets in when the lights go out if you'd like. Mine eat with the lights on though. :)
