Best way to transport an entire aquarium

When summer comes I'll have to move my 5.5G from my dorm to my room at home. Thankfully, this is only a 25 minute drive, but I'll have to transport the entire aquarium, and I want to minimize the stress to my fish.

Ideas I've had thus far:
1. Put the fish into a 1 gallon bucket with an airstone, then strip down the 5.5G, transport it, set it up, and make a second trip to get the fish. This seems like the most logical and cost effective way to me.
2. Buy a second 5.5G tank, and set it up at home. More wasted money, not to mention the beginning of MTS, but hey, I'd have 2 tanks!

Share your ideas about tank transportation! (I'm sure I'm not the only college student here who has had to deal with this problem)

I'm in the middle of a move, and I gave away most of my tanks except the biggest one (180g) and the smallest one (6g).

The six gallon was easy to move... I emptied the water very low so it barely covered the driftwood and fish, then sat it on the passenger seat of my car and straped it in with a seatbelt.

The big one was emptied completely (except for gravel) then moved with a dolly onto a truck, etc...

This 180g has been moved 4 times now with minimal cosmetic bruises :dance2:

When moving a larger tank i would get an ice chest, pour fish and and water in it, and then ship the aquarium and filter ect sepratly.

Here is what I would do:
go to the bakery at walmart and get a 5 gallon icing bucket. Clean it out realy well(do not use soap) then put most the water from the tank in the bucket and put the lid on. Get another container or a couple fish bags from the pet store(tell them you are moving) and put your fish in either of them. I'd leave the gravel in your tank with enough water to keep it covered. Take it to your house and put most of old water back in with some new water(it be like doing a water change) then put your fish in the tank. There you go.

I had 5 tanks to move when I moved to Indiana. All had live plants in them too! I drop to Illinois after classes on Friday and took the tanks down. Drove back to Indiana and got here at about 3am. I set up my 75 and 29 gallon and put the fish in there. Got to bed at 5am. Left the plants in fish shipping box and planted the tanks the next day. Be happy you are only moving one small tank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:dance2:

5.5 whole gallons? tough situation. i would take out all the decorations (but not the gravel), put decorations and filter into a plastic bag, and empty out half the water.

hold it on your lap in the car.
