Well I have been researching about sumps for a couple years and I have finally got one with my new tank. Now I have a few questions about pumps and Sumps.

I have a 90Gal tank with 33Gal sump, the pump that came with the tank seams to be dieing it does not have the power I would expect from a pump for this tank. And I don’t know what kind it is all the labels are gone off it. Can any one identify it? (Type/GPH)

I am looking at getting a new pump So far i am looking at
Mag Drive 9.5 950GPH
or Mag Drive 12 1200GPH
Are the AQUAGLOBE ones any good?
What is a good pump for a 90Gal? Or best Pump?

As for my sump questions, I have a overflow built into the tank its filed with bio balls and has floss at the top. Then drains into the sump bellow.

is it bad when the water flows over top and does not go thru the sponge?
How can i improve this design?
I have some Bio balls sitting around where can I add these to the sump?

you can see more pics of this tank and sump here.

Your existing pump looks like a small Mag Drive pump. I have one a bit larger for my 72 gallon and it works fine.

As far as your sump goes, not sure how your overflow is set up - you mention you have bioballs in it. I have my bioballs in my sump with only a sponge prefilter in my overflow, and floss before the bioballs in the sump.

To stop the water from going over your sponges, why not force it under by putting a full plexiglass divider on the top half of the sump in place of the eggcrate you have there. Leave the bottom half open so the water is forced to run thru the sponge

Just a follow up question. What is an overflow box and how does this work? How does one go about creating one? To be quite frank, I have been trying to find out what this thing is. Won't water go down anyway because of gravity? Why do we need one? I have everything more or less pat down except for this overflow box. Any takers? Thanks.

MokMu: The over flow box is the W/D part of the fillter, in my tank there is a glass box made in the coner where wher the water flows into down to the bottom of the tank where there is a hole going into the sump.

superstein61: do you know what size of magdrive you have on your 72gal?
