heya guys,
well i love to keep fish, and have been doing it 4 years, though u didnt ask 4 my life story. il lget straight to the point. i want a way to make money in the fish business without starting up a shop. well i ahve got quite a few tanks so breeding wont really be a problem. if i were to breed fish what fish would you recommend.
also are there any other profit making suggestions anyone else out there has found ?

it will be very hard to pull off

It is very difficult to make decent money in an area many others consider a hobby. If I breed angelfish as a hobby, I do not care what price I get for my fry. You could only get a higher price than me if your fish were demonstrably better than mine. Even then, the volume required selling $3 fish to cover costs and a reasonable pay for your time would call for a fairly large scale and sophisticated operation. You certainly would be hard pressed to compete on cost with a Florida pond operation.

So your niche must be on quality or rarity or both. Good luck.

Also, consider your market. You are in a huge, relatively sparsely populated, isolated country. Who besides the Roo Ranchers and Newzies could you sell to? The Asians? That would be like carrying coals to Newcastle.

I don't mean to shut down your hopes. What about a species that isn't popular right now in Ozz. Are Dwarf African frogs or Amano shrimp big there? You could flood the market with an easy to breed species that hasn't really "caught on" as much down there and create a niche for yourself.

Yeah, um, don't take that suggestion.

It will be pretty tough...you'd have to get new species that just got to your market, or you'd have to have enough fish to saturate the market with that which you breed.

Australia is a special case. Importation of exotic fishes is pretty strictly controlled, am I right? So if you're in an area where you don't have heating expenses, and you could build yourself a fishhouse...

you could probably support the expenses of the hobby.

Check in with the members of your local fish club.
