Hi there.

We bought a 65 gallon tank yesterday and on recommendation of the sales person we bought an Eheim External Filter. He said it was the best and I figured it must be for the $160 I paid for it - on sale.

Anyway...the tank is set up but we just can't figure out this filter for the life of us!

The instructions are quite frankly horrible....giving us little to nothing to go on.

Can anyone PLEASE help us?!

My mom has been trying all day and the thing just won't work and it's making an awful noise!

Thanks in advance!

Hmmn. I looked around the eheim.com websight and don't see a model 170 listed. Anyways I don't see any links for instructions on their websight either. I'm sure that either someone here will have some helpful info, but have you considered returning the filter? Eheim are good filters, but if you can't set it up it doesn't help you much. I know petsmart.com has the rena xp-3 cannister filter listed at $105 and their retail locations should match the price if you print it out and bring it in.

oops!

I meant Eheim 2217.

They said that we can't take it back because my daughter broke the box.

SIGH

You have to keep sucking on the outake end until all the air is out and the tubes are filled with water then it should start working.

your filter is an excellent filter, just fill it with water and do as said above.

thanks for the info guys...

it is so hard to suck it out though....but I think we are going to go get one of those things they sell to help with that...

dmopar74 mentioned to fill it with water. That is one thing the instructions didn't mention. Are we supposed to fill the filter with water?? Sorry if that sounds like a dumb question but we haven't filled it with water! Should we??

one more question...is cleaning this thing as hard as the set up??

Thanks again!

This is not a dumb question, the filter must have water in it to function.

However, if you only put water in the filter, there will still be air in the intake hose, and it would be much more difficult to prime by manually sucking on the output hose, if water is in the canister (I would think).

So I would suggest sucking very hard on the output hose while the canister is dry. Or better yet, buy a priming ball, a very useful tool when using an Ehiem Classic.

thank you.

It has been very frustrating because as I mentioned, the instructions are simply awful and getting answers is like pulling teeth with the sales people at Big Al's. We are anxious to get the tank running...so yes, we are going to get a priming ball...thanks for the tips!
Wish us luck!

No problem!

It looks like you're on the right track so far.:thm:

Good Luck!
