I recently collected a baby french or gray angel on a recent trip to florida(thinking its a gray because of it has a clear tail altho its really hard to tell at its current size),It is no bigger than a quarter right now. Keeping it in a 2 gallon eclipse setup because I wouldnt be able to feed it in my larger tanks. My question is how quickly do they grow at this stage? I have it eating freeze dried brine shrimp and formula 2 flake. Will be moving it to a 55 and ultimatly a 125.

it will need more than 125 gallons they get huge.....and you caught it yourself in Florida? isnt everything protected there? 2 gallon wont stay stable and will probably kill the fish unless the tank is watched every day and tested the ph wont stay stable and the SG will rise quick. sence its a baby fish it will be sencitive...i wish you bess of luck though...please take good care of it

tank is watched really closely, im not thrilled about keeping it in such a small tank but i would have to over feed like crazy for it to be able to find enough food to eat in a larger tank since the only pieces it eats are practically invisible anyway(a piece of flake the size half the size of a dime and the things stomach is bulging like no other), I'm not to worried about it outgrowing the 125 in any reasonable amount of time as everything ive read is they grow very slowly once they reach 6-7 inches. You can collect in florida with permits i know, but i think thats only necessary if you are trying to make money collecting them. http://www.personal.psu.edu/mem5079/angel1.jpg theres a picture of it from the day i collected it. any ideas french or gray?

That is a Grey Angelfish. Aside from the Grey's clear tail with a straight edge, a reliable way of distinguishing between very small French and Grey Angels is the way they swim. A small French swims like a Percula Clown, with a kind of weaving or rocking motion. Greys swim in more of a straight or darting pattern, very much like a Butterfly Fish. I've raised many many small angels that I hand collected. They need to eat several times a day, and high protein/fat foods are best, like live Black worms, frozen Cyclops, Mysis, etc. They are primarily carnivores until they get to be about 3 inches long. They grow quickly; a one inch fish should double in size in 4 to 6 weeks.
