Aloha from Hawaii!
I just got a 10-gallon tank for an Easter gift... and two lil fantail goldfish. While not as fancy as the Ryukins and such that cost more... these guys are great to have in my room and watching them helps me calm down in the midst of collegiate study stresses!
Just thought I would join this group and make the most of my goldfish-owning experience! I just named the two lil ones...
"Buddy" because he follows me back and forth if i walk in front of the tank...
"Wai'olu" (Graceful water) because she/he (can't tell!) has a longer, flowing tail.
OK, enough for now. ALOHA to everyone...

and welcome to Aquaria Central, home of the sunniest fishkeepers on the internet (as long as you don't bring up the War, salt or carbon, then we get pretty animated):)
Yep, that's how I started out too. Man, I do love fantails.
Two fantails will grow quickly and will soon outpace your tank's carrying capacity. I hope you aren't planning on putting any more fish in the tank. I have two fantail - only tanks, each one consisting of 3 fantails in 29 gallons of water. That is below the water minimums anyone else would recommend here, but I've had good fortune for the past 6 or seven years.
Since you've got a small tank for two growing fish, I would recommend a bubble wand to create more surface water agitation. This helps alllow excess ammonia to pass out of the water and into your room's atmosphere. I credit a bubble wand with my being able to keep heavier loads of GF than is normally recommended.
Best of luck, and thanks for stopping by...

Aloha!
Thanks for your responses... I am not planning on adding any more fish to the tank... However, I was not aware that they will be growing so quickly... Looks like that will force my parents to hurry and build me my extention so I can get a 60 gallon tank!
What plants should I put with the fish... there is so much discussion about it on here that I am a little confused as to which to put with them!
thanks!

I gave up trying to keep live plants with GF. First off, the water was usually cooler than most plants like, and secondly, the smaller tank you have will not allow you to get a hood big enough that will give you the wattage you need for plants. Now, when you get that 60g tank, then you'll be able to get a hood that has one of the new compact fluorescent bulb fixtures. Then, you'll be able to get 4 55w bulbs, and that will allow you to grow most of the plants you'd want.
Until then, I'd recommend that you get good at keeping a pair of fantails alive and healthy in a 10g. You do that, and you'll be well on your way...

Aloha Val!
Thanks for the tip. I don't think I will be putting in live plants... I will keep looking for something interesting besides polised rock to satisfy the interest of my ever-exploring goldfish!
Aloha
