Last night I was watching "24" and there was a character on the show who was bummed out that he had unwillingly helped terrorists arm a nuclear bomb. He didn't want to do it, but was really being tortured and finally agreed. Guy was rescued, but terrorists got away with bomb. Afterward, he was really upset with himself for placing the lives of thousands of people in jeopardy in order to save his own.
While watching, I mentioned to my wife that I would have done the same thing. My life is as important to me as other folks' lives are to them, so I would have done what was needed to survive. My wife disagreed and said that thousands of lives are more important than her one life...although she didn't go so far to say that she would have given her life.
Anyhow, just curious as to what other folks think they would do. Would you give your own life to save the lives of thousands of strangers? We'll say that if you agree to jump off of a cliff, thousands of strangers in another part of the country would be spared an instant death. Would you do it?
