Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make my AC 500 quiet? Right now it's pretty darn loud! And by loud, I mean really really ridiculously loud. Am I just doomed to buy a new (and much quieter) filter??

What kind of noise is it making???
How long have you had the filter? When I first got my AC500, it was pretty loud. After a few weeks, it settled down.

ok i have 3 aquaclear filters runningjust in my bedroom and I can sleep perfectly with it. You sure nothing is rubbing like the turbine or something. (You know you supposed to clean those removable parts every 2 months?

yeah, i ahve 2 in my bedroom, 1 eheim 2260 and one 2250, and i ahve no probs, (the 2260 and 50 r in cabinets). all i can hear is the running water. i ahd the problem on one of them, so i took off the powerhead part, removed the impeller, and gave it a really good flushing with a strong blast of water, and cleaned the inside with earbuds after, and i also cleaned the impeller and magnet part with tissues, after this, i worked like a dream.
hope this helps.

If you are talking about the the noise from the water return then maybe I can help. I noticed that if you keep the water level fairly high in the tank it can help eliminate the noise. If that doesn't work, a thin sheet of plastic (like the kind often found inside day planners and binders) can be placed loosely against the waterfall return. The water will run against the plastic and slip silently into the tank. It takes a little adjustment to get right. You can kinda of see what I mean from this picture (http://www.stjinks.com/viewer.php?picture=/album/15/15-5.jpg). This has worked very well for me before with bedroom tanks.

I've had AC HOB's and had some noise with them after a cleaning. The quickest way to 'seat' the impeller is to turn it on and off several times.
The plastic lid can and will rattle some, but not near as loud as the impeller 'sticking'. I've had to put a small rock on top of the lid to keep it quiet (you couldn't see the rock..).

If its not the lid vibrating or the water, its probably the impellor. Check if it has any nicks or cracks in it. If it does, that's probably the problem. You can replace the impellor for a few bucks, but you probably have to buy it online. Also, if its dirty this could be the problem, but if its clean, probably need a new one.
