Any time i buy a clown loach for my community tank it seems to pick up ick, are clowns more susceptable than other fish to ick?
are there any community fish to be avoided because they are more susceptable than others to ick.

Yes, clowns are notorious for ich.

I believe that clowns are very susceptible to ich, but I would have to look to find a site with a list of fish susceptible. I'll be back in ten or so.

Here's a chart (http://www.bestfish.com/fishchrt.txt).

interesting chart.
its easier to read if you paste it into excel and narrow up the columns a bit.

There is actually an Excel version and a Quattro Pro one as well.
Excel version (http://www.bestfish.com/fish.zip)
Quattro Pro version (http://www.bestfish.com/fishquat.zip)

No problem. Glad that I could find it again, as I had lost the link to the darn thing for a while!

Yep, Ive always wanted to have clown loaches in one of my tanks, but whenever I see them in my lfs, at least one of them is always infested.
Apparently moving them ( ie disributer>lfs ... lfs>your tank) is enough to trigger it.
There are medicinal remidies for ich, if you want to go down that road, but I suggest just waiting your time, and buying healhty fish from your lfs.
Hope this helps,
A

Unfortunately, there aren't many medicines which take care of ich and not your clown loaches...you have to find catfish-safe ich meds (good for scaleless fishes like loaches) and be willing to pay through the nose for them. (Unless things have changed recently...I haven't seen a price sheet for catfish-safe ich meds in a while now.)

ARE FRY JUST AS SUSCEPTABLE AS ADULT FISH TO ICK.
ChilDawg
04-22-2003, 7:41 PM
I would expect that they would be more susceptible than their adult counterparts as immune systems aren't yet fully formed at that point.
I'll check to be sure, though...back in ten or so.

Upon further review, it seems as though fry are more susceptible to all of the common aquarium diseases than their [presumedly healthy for this postulate to work] parents.

Is that chart right? It says that clown loaches are aggressive and need to be warm water. I have never hear of this.

I got something different when I read the chart (see next post):
ChilDawg

I get B-H-K-Q-Y:
B Spirited - normally peaceful, but may chase slow species
H Hardy - tolerant to various water conditions and not commonly affected by hard to
treat diseases
K Subject to "Ich" - susceptible to the common, but very easily controlled parasite, Ich
Q Jumpers - tanks should be completely covered
Y Scavenger - will eat troublesome uneaten food particles that will otherwise cloud and
pollute water (at least two (2) scavengers/10 gal.)

good point Dawg. Because ive never owned them, I didnt think about there scalelessness (is that a word!) and medicine.
I reaffirm my previous post - buy healthy fish.... but dont go for over the counter remedies!

I agree, Roland...always buy healthy fish...but...If you buy fish that are susceptible to ich, you may want to take extra precautions to keep them warm on the trip to your house from the LFS.
Yeah, I don't think that OTC meds are the greatest things ever, but some do work well.

Oh, I though so, I guess all the column shifted on excel.
ChilDawg
04-22-2003, 9:58 PM
Yeah, they shifted when I opened the Excel file in Quattro Pro and the QP one in QP as well.
I have 3 clowns that I've had about 8 years and never had ich.
My blood parot got ick once but none of the other fish cought it.
Just lucky I guess!

Luck would seem to be a part of the equation, but superb fishkeeping probably has something to do with it as well, punch...and the fact that your clowns don't get ich validates that.

One interesting thing I noticed was that it lists male Bettas as sensitive to well water. Well water is described by them as being any tap water not from Michigan (column Q)
If I am getting the colums straight and understanding what they are saying......I disagree! I have seem Bettas kept in "true" well water and also numerous tap waters (most are).

I think that they mean w/o acclimation, but I'm not sure. I don't disagree with the fact that there are many discrepancies with the facts when this chart is read, but I think that it is overall a good tool (if taken with a grain of salt).

Upon further review, I think that the mark is in column V.
V: Special treatment - a clerk should be consulted to find out the unique properties of these fish.

Okay, I tried to resist...But "special properties"? Like the ability to fly, or turn into a small chair?
What the heck!
:D ;)

Now I gotta see which ones have "special properties"...more time wasted (sigh) :D

I used formalin (and salt) on my loaches (when first purchased) to be sure they weren't carrying ich. Formalin is cheap if you buy the full strength stuff (37% formaldehyde). Just an fyi. 1/2 dose initially, wait 4 hours and add another 1/2 dose. After that, you can add full dose for the remainding days.
Wouldn't want a crab as a familiar sitting on my shoulder, might pinch my ear...ouch!
