:dive2: The reason I ask is my biology teacher is giving me five of them. They will go in my 20 gallon tank. They are currently in a 10 gallon tank with no filtration or air, at all. Just still, stagnant water. She is bringing in a new filter and is cleaning her tank tomorrow so she can go get some tropical fish. She is giving these to me for free. She said that a student gave her some and that they mated and had over 200 babies (not all at once, but in all). She said that she has been trying to get rid of them, but no one wants them because she gave the babies to a lot of the staff at school, so I told her that I would give my Zebra Danios to my grandma and take her fish tomorrow. I can't wait!!! So, how much are they worth? They are about an inch long (she gave away the original parents).

I meant if I was to go to the typical petstore and buy them. Only 10 cents?
WOW!!

$2.49 to $4.99

They are great fish to have and breed. Ones that were 1/2 inch my LFS would give me $.25 each store credit. I also gave lots of them away at work.

It is a shame people have to even buy these fish, because so many people are willing to give the fry away.

My guess is that yours will have fry also and you can give some away.

 Retail pricing is always subjective but on average expect to pay $2.99 to $4.99 for the regular black or pink baby 'cons'. As far as what they are really worth ---- $.50 / .75 tops. "T"

They sell them at one of the LFS I frequent for 4 for $1. I have seen them for sale at petsmart for like $3 or $4 a piece. The thing with cons is once you get a pair you will have to find an outlet for all the fry you will have. Unless you have some larger fish to feed them to or a LFS that will take them you'll have more fry than you know what to do with.

Pet stores down here sell them for less than $1, and they were 9 cents on the last wholesale list I saw.

By the way, expect some nasty territoriality once they start to grow. You'll need rockwork and/or driftwood to divide the tank into territories, and I don't think a 20g has enough square footage for 5 adult convicts.

Here is how my tank is set up. I have to take them because I know that the 10 gallon that they are in isn't enough. I have plent of caves and stuff.

Those things breed in the bag on the way home. I have 12 of them in a 75 gallon and only because I have so many and are constantly guarding the territory they dont have time to breed like bunnies. If you put rocks in the tank make sure you put the rocks on something solid because these guys will dig the gravel and undermine the rocks which can cause them to fall against the glasss. I put mine on lighting eggcrate and then put the gravel in. Works great.

Dude,

I'd rearrange your rocks a bit. You need seperate piles. The dominant fish (or possibly pair) is going to try and consider that entire structure it's space.

Like was said before, they are VERY territorial, and quite honestly, they're bullies. I've seen a 1 inch convict cow an 8 inch oscar, several green terrors and a jack dempsey. They are just relentless.

That being said, I love my convicts, and to me they're worth MUCH more than $4.99.

That being said, I usually see the lil' fellas for for ~ $5.00.

Just make that one pile into several and you'll be set!

does any one know how fast they grow?

depends on their diet and water quality

my fry grew from half a centimeter to 3 inches in 6 months..

i've kept them for almost 13 years and it seems they grow pretty slowly once they hit the 1.5 inches mark..and if you have one 2-3 inches..could take years to get it to full size..especially if its a male..it took my male 2 1/2 years to reach 4 inches
