My filter which came with the 55g tank is about to be let go since it's making a lot of noises and the water streams are getting weaker. I have checked most components accesible (which aren't many) but still have no clue why. Anyway, I am now in the process of choosing another filter for my tank. Which brand should I get? I don't need anything too heavy duty since my Oscars will be moved to a 125g in a few months and the current 55g will be turned into a community tank. However I do need something reliable and relatively quiet. You don't need to hear that thing remind you that it's there every time you interact with your fish anyway.

I dont have much experience with FW filtration but I hear that the AC filters are silent as well as the emperors. My experience is limited to my fluval 305 canister which is also silent.

I currently have 3 emporer 400's running on several tanks, and I've never had a problem with filtration. The drop in filters are filled w/ carbon and cheap on the internet, too...

I like the Emporers, too. I have 2 and couldn't be happier with them. The extra media slot provides a lot of flexibility.

Thanks for the quick responses.

Ok, so Emperors are good and quiet. What are the water outlets like? I read some where that oscars like still water better than water with a lot of movement. My current filter has two outlets which create a lot of flow in the tank and I've noticed my oscars tend to stay away from that side. However, my understanding is splashing increases oxygen in water and therefore such movement is not always a bad thing. I remember seeing a filter online, not sure what brand it was but it had like a tube that ran across and over the water and there were a bunch of small holes for outlets on that tube. That way (I think) you get a lot of splashing but minimize movement. Do you guys happen to know what kind of filter it is? Also, will that or the emperot fit the back of my tank where it goes through the back of the hood? There is a slot *about* 15' by 6' in size

you can make that setupwith a canister and some pvc. i would still suggest a penguin w/ biowheels or 2. my oscars never minded the movement . you get more movement from canister/jet style water outlets than an "overflow" style filter

I forgot an important question. Should I decide to change the filter, how will I avoid "new tank syndrome"?

On a 55g you should have enough room to run both filters for a good amount of time that way your new filter will have a chance to build up some bacteria. For me atm given a choice between a penguin and an aquaclear I'd go with an aquaclear, but really there is nothing wrong with either filter.

i personally say go with AC's.

I dont really like biowheel filters not because they are bad filters which they arnt, but once your water level gets low, the wheel makes more splashes on the water surface which makes them more noise.

Just my opion, good luck:huh:
