    canister or sump?

Go for something like Eheim 2026. Simple, silent, effective, versatile and bullet proof (unlike Fluval 404). More than enough for a reasonable bioload. Of course, if you're going to keep, let's say, oscars, you may want to add a nice mechanical filter. But since you've mentioned plants, I...

    Cleaning Micron Cartridge...

Not for this application. Clorox is a 5-6% solution of sodium hypochlorite. So, if these numbers are less frightening... ;)

    Cleaning Micron Cartridge...

I clean mine in undiluted Clorox. They're clean in a few hours, but I tend to keep them there for a a week or so (just because I'm too lazy to remove them earlier). The same solution can be reused a couple of times. Cartridges take this treatment with no problems and last years.

    Potassium permanganate: do you dare?

To answer your original question... Count me in although I don't use it often nowdays. Thirty years ago we used KMnO4 as often as salt or nitrofurans.

    Bio-spira works!!!

Dragon, you're not planning to add more Bio-Spira to the tank just yet, right? Let's see how the intitial portion will hold up.

    Cycling or not?

You won't have any problems with ammonia/nitrite poisoning if you stock your tank that slowly. Actually, you may easily start with many more than just a couple of cardinals. Starting with, let's say, a dozen will be equally safe for the tank of this size. As for you question about outpacing...

    Serious hardness issue!

Something is very fishy here. With this pH, there is no way for the substrate to dissolve that quickly (if at all). And I can only see one way to increase GH that much and/or that quickly: use of very soluble salt of calcium or magnesium (something like Epsom salt or calcium chloride). As...

What level of nitrite is harmful?

Goldfish are very hardy. They handle high wastes concentrations very well (I'm not saying they enjoy it, of course). So 1 ppm of nitrites for a couple of weeks shouldn't be a major problem for them. If you want, you may add just a bit of table salt. Theoretically, chloride ion helps fish cope...

    sand sifters ?

If you use river sand (or similar grain size substrate) of this depth, you're asking for troubles. A way too deep for such fine substrates.

DIY Dechlorinator - in layman's terms

:) With DIY, your $20 will last for a decade, and you will know exactly that there is nothing there but plain dechlorinator. P.S. It's not like I'm against the commercial stuff, but since you asked... Just for a discussion. :)

DIY Dechlorinator - in layman's terms

Actually, 1 drop of 10% (not 1%) Sodium thiosulfate solution per gallon of water will neutralize 1 ppm of chlorine. Here is how I do this. I dissolve 29 g of Sodium thiosulfate (from a photographic supply store) in 2 liters of water. The solution goes into a 2-liter container with a pump...

    new to FISHLESS Cycle

Well. Turn your UV off. You don't need it to interfere with free-floating flora developing in your tank. Nitrification is only one part of biofiltration. There are other very important microorganisms in any tank. And many of them are free-floating. By the way, in addition to ammonia, you may...
