It happens.. far to often.. But what you are trying to do is your own strain. This will be a mutt, or look like a fancy guppy. Nothing special. Many breeders look down on crosses like this. You want to keep your strains true if you ever want to sell.
I can tell you that you will have issues with a 55 gal doing an island setup like that. The Depth of a 55 would give you problems doing an island setup. Since a 55 is about 13 inches deep (as in width) . It doesn't give you much room to work with. I am not saying it's impossible, just gonna...
I have no idea what a Heavy planted tank looks like at all. This picture does not do its justice. This is my Endler tank. I have 7 females to 1 male. 2 albino Cories and I have no idea how many Amano are in there.. i know there they are there. I know i have bought about 10 for this 20 and 2...
I suggest with a Heavy planted tank, think of your clean up crew first and work with them and up.
I like the kuhli loaches, I would also toss in some Amano shrimp. They are the best Algae cleaners out there. And hardy as well.
I think you can get away with some brilliant larger schooling fish.. how about Rosy Barbs, Platies, or even some Rainbow Fish. there are so many other fish to try. :)
Yes, you get small schooling fish you can slowly watch them disappear. I had angels that would grab Zebra Danios. I would go with larger tetras, congo, black skirt, or even Bleeding hearts.
"You forgot temperature Doug. The problem is that a lot of folks keep their food in their fish room (which may be heated up to 80 degrees) or store their food on top of the tank on a fluorescent light. Both will degrade quality faster as opposed to the expiry date."
Not to mention that they...
Who else keeps their fish food in the refrigerator? like any food, flake foods go bad eventually. I keep my flake in a small soda fridge just to keep it cool and fresh longer. I also do this with my pelleted food as well. I've also started to buy better foods, such as Extreme's Krill Flakes...
Here are my fish.
I will say, i have kept these fish for many years. My colony died off and finally got a new one going.
I've had these fish for a few days already and they have adjusted pretty good. They are currently in a 5 gallon tank.

Hey folks.. Just a general shoot out. Lets see what everyone is keeping?
Here are a few photos of my collection
3 lined mud turtle.
3 Toed Box Turtle.. Been in my collection since 06.
Asian Box Turtle
Central American Banded Gecko
Various Leopards.
Well hell.. that is some sad news indeed. I am sorry to hear that. Should we get you an Asian Water Monitor as a replacement? ;)
Heck, i recently adopted a female Savannah Monitor. She is my first and a bit touchy. Probably the reason she went up for adoption.
