    How do you say "eheim"?

    Correct.

Bubbles forming on surface of water

If it's foamy bubbles on the surface not to worry, unless as Squawkbert says they cover too much of the surface. They are not a problem in themselves, but what that would mean is you have an excess of organics breaking down - you sometimes see the same thing along lake shores, turbulence...

    the Salt ich treatment question

The 1/4 teaspoon per gallon means for the volume of the tank. Your first addition would be 45 gallons divided by 4 = 11 1/4. You would mix 11 1/4 teaspoons each hour. If you follow the method’s timeframe it will still take you the 4 hours to get up to 1 teaspoon per gallon.

    Arghh!!! ICK!

If it's time to do regular water changes, then yes, do them. Only add salt to the new water - mix it up first at the same proportion that's in your tank. Salt should be dissolved first before adding to your tank so there should not be any granules showing up on the fish.

can I use teabags to add tannins to the water?

    Quick Cure medication?

Do you know the kind of wood? Malaysian driftwood, which is dense and dark, was fine. Not so sure about softer or lighter coloured driftwood.

    Bugs? in tank

Daphnia is my first guess, but could be a number of things. See if they match up to any pics and descriptions here: http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/index.html?http://www.microscopy-uk.org.uk/pond/index.html

    Quick Cure medication?

It will stain the silicone seams and some plastics. Shouldn't stain sand but to be sure, take a 1/4 cup out put it in a bowl of water with a drop of the stuff (stronger solution that would be in your tank) and see what happens.

Aquarium Salt & the Planted Aquarium

Adding salt for general well-being is not needed on a regular basis in a freshwater tank. Therefore, no conflict with plants. On the odd occasion salt may be required (e.g. to treat a case of ich), for the short term required, it will not adversely affect most plants. Obviously, I haven't had...

    Testing for Ammonia vs. Ammonium

If you can read past the 'loud' background wallpaper: quoting, in part: There are other kits/indicators that use a base of the Salicylate reagent along with some thing else (I am not sure what) to allow them to read thru (disregard) bound ammonia and read only free ammonia. These would be the...

Squiggly worms in my tank! Eeek!

In the instances on that site, the worms were attached to the fish. Yes, there are parasitic worms and nematodes - But these free-swimming nematodes (and crawling planaria) are not harmful to fish.

Squiggly worms in my tank! Eeek!

Great movie!!! Honestly, I love stuff like that. Planaria crawl on objects, nematodes swim frantically in an 'S' shape. Neither are harmful but an over-abundance means you might need to feed less and gravel vacuum a bit more.

A fact i want to know

Yes, flat foam like that. e.g. AquaClear & fluval foams (but they come in different sizes). 2 fluval foams on top of one another = approx thickness of 1 AC foam. http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18409/si1378648/cl0/aquaclear20minifoaminsertsingle...

Post pictures of clay pot arrangements here!

I'm not sure if you can rub the 'joins' with sandpaper or something. I have found long term (I'm talking 1+ years down the road) silicone on such a very smooth surface came apart. Held great on rougher joins.

A fact i want to know

Not in your tank. When you do your water changes, empty some of the old water into your fish-only container (I have several fish-only basins and pails) Or, put treated water in the utensil to rinse. Swish stuff around in that. You will not lose much bacteria by rinsing it and throwing the...

    Ammonia Levels

No, you cannot change the water too much. It is a misconception that changing the water will slow your cycle. Any ammonia reading means there is excess that the biofilter can currently process, therefore it will grow in its regular timeframe. It does not say to itself, "Whoa, there's a LOT of...

    Ammonia Levels

Ammonia will drop when there are enough bacteria to handle the CURRENT fish load, it is not dependent on a higher reading. As long as there is any reading at all, things will progress. As previously suggested, water change, water change, water change. Keep those levels low. At 1.0 it is WAY...

A fact i want to know

Yes, rinse the quilt batting or sponge once in a while. You will lose a bit of the bacteria but not too much. They are firmly attached to surfaces, but just remember to rinse in old tank water or treated tap water. You can buy a sponge for any filter brand and cut it to fit into yours, i.e...

A fact i want to know

Media is the stuff in your filter. What other media do you have in your filter? Do I understand correct - you have the batting as the last thing your water passes through (after the other stuff in your filter) just before the bio wheel? Yes, the batting will collect good bacteria and act...
