    six leg shrimp

I've seen bamboo shrimp labeled as "six legged shrimp" quite often. I have no idea what the label is specifically referring to, but it's the only species that I have seen being called that.

    Attempting to Breed Amano Shrimp

Sorry, I missed your post. Phytoplankton is the way to go for feeding larvae, at least in the beginning stages. I've tried different types of food as well as a commercial live phytoplankton, but it didn't seem to produce consistent results.

    Attempting to Breed Amano Shrimp

I haven't manged to get the bamboo to adulthoold as of yet. To be honest, breeding the amano has taken up most of my attention. I tried to get the larvae from my bamboo a few times, but the move to the hatching tank really stresses her out, and I ended up putting her back in the main tank...

    Attempting to Breed Amano Shrimp

Do you have a tank dedicated for hatching the larvae? In my experience, they will not last long if there are any shrimp in the tank with them. Over the span of one night, the larval population can go from several hundred to only a handful, if any survive at all. It doesn't even seem to matter...

    Attempting to Breed Amano Shrimp

Moving a pregnant shrimp can be tricky, in my experience. It's not so much from the standpoint of the shrimp's well-being, but that of its eggs. The move can stress out the shrimp quite a bit and you might lose the eggs in the process. I've watched shrimp scrape out all of the eggs from her...

    amano shrimp question

It's interesting that it happens to both your large and small shrimp. Do you happen to know if the larger ones were female and the smaller males? I'm still trying to figure out what is the age these shrimp are capable of reaching. Of course, it's difficult to keep track of which shrimp are...

    Attempting to Breed Amano Shrimp

The eggs turning orange is interesting. I've had pretty good luck with breeding the amano, and I've never seen the eggs display that color before. Typically, they lighten up to a beige color before hatching. I almost wonder if they aren't ferrtile. Best of luck with your endeavors though...

    African Giant Filter Shrimp

Very cool! I hope you find them as fascintaing as I do. Do you have any idea what size they are going to be? It's kind of fun and interesting to watch them grow as they get older. I've actually kept the front legs of my adult male's moltings along the way. For some reason, that is the only...

    African Giant Filter Shrimp

Sorry, but they are already spoken for. You might want to try asking about them in some smaller fish stores in your area. You never know if they might be able to order some in. I picked up the last 5 of my vampires at a place that I've been selling my amano offspring at.

    African Giant Filter Shrimp

It's tough to say exactly how much room the shrimp need. They can be somehwat territorial at times. When my vampires were younger, they went through phases of being pretty rough with each other, particularly before they hit sexual maturity. They started getting along much better after that...

    African Giant Filter Shrimp

I can't say that I've ever tested my water for ph, so I'm not sure about that, but my tanks stay in the normal range for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. The temperature in my 55 gallon tank usually runs around 80-82 degrees. I keep two adult and one juvenile vampire shrimp in there with 4...

    African Giant Filter Shrimp

What would you like to know? I have seven of them, myself. They are, by far, the most interesting creatures I have ever kept. I can sit there and watch them for hours. Of course, I'm quite addicted to shrimp.

    Amano shrimp lifespan?

I've had my amano about 2 and a half years now, and they still seem to be doing well. I still use the original females for breeding. I can't say for sure how old they were when I got them, but based on their size and my experience with raising these shrimp, they were at the very least 4 or 5...

    Male Bamboo Aggression Issues

For the last couple of days, my male bamboo shrimp keeps going after my male vampire. Noramlly, the vampire stays in a cave on the other side of the tank (55 gallon), but he switched to the other side when the female took over his cave. Ever since then, the bamboo keeps charging into the cave...

    African Filter Shrimp

Nice pictures! It's possible that the one on the right could be a female, since the front legs look a litle smaller. Another indication for distinguishing male from female is that the female vampire tends to be a bit less hairy on the underside. At least that's the case with mine.

    breeding fan shrimp

I would agree that the amano raising information is a good place to start. About the only thing I can offer is to observe the larvae closely. They seem to reach a certain point in development (in the larval stages) where they require some changes in their environment. I was able to...

What Shrimp have I ended up with?

I also apologize for taking this thread off course. It's been an interesting time for the filter feeders. I don't know if other people have witnessed the same with their shrimp, but both the bamboo and vampires have gone through a behavioral change throughout the winter. The vampire have...

What Shrimp have I ended up with?

Hey pixl8r, long time no see! I actually still do the amano breeding. At the moment, I'm just waiting for latest batch to grow big enough to take in to the stores before I start in on the next one. I managed to get about 10 more females in the shrimp I kept from my first successful attempt at...

What Shrimp have I ended up with?

I would also have to put a vote in for amano.
