Mega-Powerful Nitrate and Phosphate Remover Replaces Skimmer, Refugium, part 1-4

I like the gravel vac setup.. What was used to draw the water? A standard powerhead?

Moving from FT Drum NY to FT Stewart GA! HELP!!

Honestly, that doesn't even matter. I have a bad knee, and I'm non-deployable (They'll love me when I get there!) so, I'll have TONS of time for my fish! I'm gonna start collecting buckets for monthly ocean runs.. You just can't beat the real thing when it comes time for water changes..

Moving from FT Drum NY to FT Stewart GA! HELP!!

I have a HUGE problem in the near future... I'm stationed at FT Drum right now, but I just came down on orders to FT Stewart, Georgia.. I need help transferring some of my livestock! I have NO IDEA how to make this happen, and I don't want to take it all.. I have a yellow tang, porcupine puffer...

    What timer do you use?

I'm also using basic analog timers from the hardware store. Nothing fancy about them; set the time, set the switches.. I've been using the same two timers for almost two years now. They work just fine. I don't need some super elaborate and pricey timer!

    "modular" sump build..

I know; I know.. I'm just not patient enough to wait, and I was trying to avoid buying anything else.. If I can't figure it out soon, I will get some uniseals!!

    "modular" sump build..

Well, I'm racking my brain right now... I can get one side to seal properly, but the other is leaking very slowly. I'm still working on it though! I've glued the male side of the couplers into the box to eliminate one possible leak point. Somehow, I still get a slight leak on the other side...

    Little star friend or foe?

Heh, yeah.. He dissappeared long before I got the eel..

    Little star friend or foe?

I don't think the micro brittles get that big. I had one a long time ago, but if he gets too bold, he'll most likely get eaten. I think that is what happened to mine...

old coralline algae stuck on overflow

Have you tried something like an old credit card? Getting it off glass is easy; just use a razor (Carefully). If it's on the overflow, I'd be afraid to scratch it up...

    "modular" sump build..

Another small hurdle I've hit is getting a good seal between the DIY bulkheads. I just can't seem to hand torque them enough to stop leakage in both. (One has stopped.) I doubled up my gaskets on one side, and that stopped one side totally. Unfortunately, the other is a tad harder to turn, and...

    "modular" sump build..

Here's some important things I've learned: 1. PVC pipe threading is tapered.. This means there is NO way to crank the two pieces together all the way and close the gap. This being said; I had to construct some bushings by cutting some of the extra "slip" joint off each female coupler. 2...

Here's the couplers in place (loosely) Next, I have to put some sort of gaskets in..

    "modular" sump build..

The bins hold between 7 and 8 gallons of water each, so the total capacity is more than I need. Of course, a larger sump means more water in the system anyways, so I'm doing my best to ensure the "operational" level doesn't increase too much. Otherwise, I defeated the purpose of the larger...

    "modular" sump build..

My next step was to get them as close to each other without compromising their strength, so I cut one edge off one bin, and slotted it to match the edge on the other bin. This allows them to lock together and share the load of the water between them. I don't know if this was truly needed, as I...

    "modular" sump build..

I've been in dire need of a new sump, ever since I upgraded to my 90 Gal. tank. Truth be told; I had NO idea how much more runoff I'd have in the event of a power outage. Once I shut stuff off fo the first water cahnge a few months ago, I realized my little 10 gallon sump was about 2 gallons...

Mega-Powerful Nitrate and Phosphate Remover Replaces Skimmer, Refugium, part 1-4

I'm in the process of rebuilding my sump from the ground up, and I will be taking the screen layout into consideration with the design.. I finally overcame my brainfart, and got the light about two inches from the screen, so we'll see how things go!

Mega-Powerful Nitrate and Phosphate Remover Replaces Skimmer, Refugium, part 1-4

The trashcan looks cool! I hope it won't get too hot in there with that light closed in.. Here's a pic of my setup so far. I need to get my light closer; this, I know. As of this moment, though, growth is picking up slowly. Quick question: Is it common to experience an algae bloom in the...
